Crater Lake

Back at the end of August, Duck boy and his dad went to Crater Lake.
Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain range, 100 miles (160 km) east of the Pacific Ocean. It lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, created when the 12,000 foot (3,660 meter) high Mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption.
Generous amounts of winter snow, averaging 533 inches (1,354 cm) per year, supply the lake with water. There are no inlets or outlets to the lake. Crater Lake, at 1,943 feet (592 meters) deep, is the seventh deepest lake in the world and the deepest in the United States. Evaporation and seepage prevent the lake from becoming any deeper. (information taken from http://www.nps.gov/crla/)
It is a beautiful, serene place to visit; one of Oregon's most amazing bits of scenery, in a state full of wondrous vistas. There are all kinds of wandering wildlife, a nice lodge, and some great trails (walking, hiking, and driving) to explore during the summer months. Crater Lake is even featured on the Oregon state quarter.

I have been fortunate enough to visit 3-4 craters in the world, but not that one. It looks so inviting!

We love Crater Lake. It's a beautiful, amazing place. And sobering. It boggles my mind how a mountain that large can just disappear, and spread ash across the western United States, even changing the weather.

I haven't been to Crater Lake before. It does look very nice and serene though.

I love the crater. But I also love the fence.

In Australia, if they're gonna fence something off, it's generally with electric wire.

I prefer the more rustic fences at Crater Lake.

When we went to crater lake about 10-11 years ago, we loved it. It was June and in the low 70's and we have pictures with 10-12 ft snow banks piled high behind us! What a beautiful place!
